Fine fibres: Wild Earth Yarns

Print this story

After a flirtation with artificial materials, the world is returning to nature’s finest fibres.

A Christchurch-based and family-owned operation sources wool and possum from the scenic South Island, crafting a beautiful range of yarns. Wild Earth Yarns stocks its own label alongside Rowan Kidsilk Haze, a mohair and silk blend on Lincoln Rd, Addington.

“We are proud to sell the world our own pure and blended yarns, which we small batch dye,” says Jacqui McLaughlin, co-owner of Wild Earth Yarns. “The resurging preference for natural fibres is a movement we are thrilled to be part of.” Their most popular product? A possum merino yarn in a 4-ply skein.

The team are working in a vital niche, a passionate and highly skilled link in the chain between growers and manufacturers. “We are delighted to work with any grower with 150kg minimum of scoured wool and prepare it for weaving, clothing, upholstery, or carpets. We welcome suggestions for specific fabrics and blends.” Find them online or feel the textures of the yarns in person.
