Fashion forward: Harlem Clothing
Christchurch fashion personality Bianca Hampton is back with a brand new store in St Albans.
When beloved local brand IvyBlu closed its doors, founder Bianca Hampton stepped away from the industry and turned her focus to other interests. Fashion, though, wouldn’t leave her alone.
“It’s a passion in you. It’s something you can’t stop thinking about,” she says, standing inside her beautiful new store on Rutland Street, St Albans.
Harlem Clothing’s succession was swift – Bianca and husband Kane dreamed up the idea in the beginning of 2025, launched in local stockists in August, and brought the bricks-and-mortar space to life this May. It sits within Rutland Row, awash with light and window displays perfect for new wardrobes. From the fit-out to the fashion, it’s been a labour of love and leaning into their strengths – Bianca has a special knack for style; Kane, however, is handy with a hammer for fabulous new shelves and racks.
On those racks, you’ll find the best of Bianca’s sartorial instinct infused with what the modern New Zealand woman wants to wear. “I work out what is wearable for our New Zealand ladies. Fit is the most important thing,” Bianca explains. “I make what I love and what I would wear all the time, and I wear Harlem every single day. And it’s not at a price that people gasp at.” The current collection consists of all the classics: cosy knits, chic blouses and blazers, versatile pants, and accessories like boots, belts, and jewellery.

Finding your favourites is so much fun. “I wanted the store to be warm and friendly, I wanted people to come in and feel relaxed and know they can browse and try on and feel comfortable,” Bianca says. “Most of our customers like to step out of the fitting room and get an opinion, other ladies will give their opinion and help style each other.” Bianca’s wardrobing advice helps too, with more than 20 years in the industry. “On our first Saturday, one lady bought my entire outfit – the boots, belt, top, and pants. I adore wardrobing people,” she says.
“I love when I can make someone feel amazing. I feel amazing here too. It’s a beautiful place to be each day. I come in and feel like it’s my home away from home. I don’t even want to go home.” Visit the boutique in-store or online.
