Enter the grid: Grid Games
Are you quick enough? A new and unique kind of entertainment that blends gaming with agility brings a real-life “floor is lava” experience to Christchurch.
Three longtime friends with a passion for gaming and strong links to Christchurch have launched a unique entertainment experience in the city, introducing locals to the interactive world of GridGames.
Founded by James, Mike and Wilson, the business was inspired by an attraction the trio encountered overseas. After experiencing the concept themselves, they saw an opportunity to bring something fresh and exciting to Christchurch.
“While we love Christchurch, sometimes we felt like there weren’t that many things to do if you weren’t into rugby, or if you were still waiting for winter to hit Mt Hutt,” says Mike, who grew up in Christchurch.
Located in Riccarton, GridGames offers immersive, technology driven games played on interactive floor grids. Players move across illuminated squares, earning points by stepping on the right colours while avoiding others. With a variety of game modes available, experiences range from friendly competition to team-based challenges. “We thought it was awesome,” says co-owner James. “There wasn’t really anything like it in Christchurch, and we wanted to create something that everyone could enjoy.”
The friends have worked hard to get it right. “The first LED system we got was very basic and restrictive, so we decided to do a complete overhaul. We created our own software so now we can easily create the games that our customers want to play.”
Unlike most entertainment venues, GridGames operates entirely remotely, allowing groups for exclusive use of the space during their booking. Without staff on-site, players can relax, have fun and enjoy a private experience with family, friends or colleagues. Don’t worry if you need help, their on-call support is just a quick tap away.
The venue features two game rooms that can accommodate groups of two to 16 players. Designed to appeal to all ages, the games are equally popular with children, parents, and grandparents. “We wanted something that truly brings people together,” says James. “A lot of activities tend to cater to either kids or adults, but with GridGames, everyone can join in.”
The business is the first venture the three friends have launched together. Drawing on backgrounds in engineering, surveying and construction, they combined their skills to create a business that reflects both their love of gaming and creating happy memories for everyone.
The founders are focused on introducing Cantabrians to a fun, active and completely different way to play. Perfect for birthday parties, family days out, team building, school groups, and friend catch-ups.
Located at 92 Riccarton Road with private bookable game rooms for groups of two or more, open seven days from morning till late. Book through the website or email info@gridgames.co.nz.
