Afresh fusion of flavour, fun, and music is landing in central Christchurch this winter, with the grand opening of Cheers and Karaoke Bar on 8 August. The date was chosen for its lucky double-eight symbolism in Asian culture, representing prosperity and good fortune.
Located at 269 Cashel Street (neighbouring One New Zealand Stadium), this is no ordinary restaurant. It’s a lively combination of Taiwanese and Asian fusion cuisine, a stylish garden bar, and five fully equipped, private karaoke rooms, making it a unique destination for casual diners, foodies, and partygoers alike.
At the heart of the venture is managing director Hank Chu, who brings more than 20 years of culinary experience to the table. Originally trained in Taiwan, Hank honed his skills in Japanese, Western, and traditional Taiwanese cooking, and his diverse background is evident in a vibrant menu that’s designed to be both comforting and bold. Diners can expect standout dishes like seafood with egg noodles, fried tofu, ramen beef noodles, traditional pork dishes, fusion-style fried chicken, and Hank’s silver medal-winning sous vide beef noodle soup, all packed with authentic flavour and creative flair.
The venue features an inviting indoor dining space for up to 30 guests and an outdoor garden bar and restaurant area, also seating 30. What really sets Cheers and Karaoke Bar apart, though, is its karaoke experience.
