Classy glass
Setting the table for casual dining these days, runs the gamut from traditional to eclectic. Opt for DIY and self-serve plates and cutlery, to a more coordinated approach with a set table. By Lynda Papesch.
Long gone are the days of white only plates, formal glass placements, and perfectly aligned cutlery ranks. One of the prettiest trends comes from an eclectic mishmash of coloured, textural plates, and delicately patterned glassware, as shown on this page.
Raid grandmother’s cupboards to see what she has, or visit pre-loved, antique, and opportunity outlets, or homeware stores to stock up. Mix and match while sticking to contrasting or complementary colours, shapes, and sizes. There’s no point arranging a tiny glass on an oversized plate, for example.
If you would rather buy new, many homeware stores stock contemporary glasses from around the world in a range of pastel and primary colours. Remember that the colours you enjoy most in your home and wardrobe will also be the colours you will be happiest with in your table settings, whether they are bold reds, blues, and oranges, or dainty hues.
