Christchurch on show

Warmer days and nights mean more outdoor activities and there are plenty on offer. Pack a picnic and head on out, or try some of the local cafes and eateries while exploring.

Check out our urban beaches
Christchurch has a huge coastline with numerous beaches worth visiting. Check out New Brighton for an endless flat beach, Sumner for a bustling seaside suburb and golden sands, and Taylor’s Mistake for remoteness and heritage baches close to the city.

Ride the wind with Velocity Karts
Harness a windy spring day at Velocity Karts. Their blokarts are like little yachts on land – like nature-powered go-karting but more fun. They can suit any skill level so don’t be intimidated. They’ve also got electric drift karts – one of only two places in the world you can hire them!

Waka on Avon
Leaving from Margaret Mahy Playground, this 45 minute waka paddling experience is an amazing historical and cultural trip on Ōtākaro Avon River. Experience the excitement of paddling a hand-crafted waka down the River Avon, and learn about the importance of the waka to Māori culture.

See the baby animals in spring
Stroll along the Ōtākaro Avon River to see the wee ducklings. Or better yet, grab a hire scooter and zip along the Avon Loop, then down past Margaret Mahy Playground. Grab the kids (or the big kids) and head to Arion Farm Park or Willowbank to see new-born lambs, pigs, and bunnies hopping around.
