Christchurch City Mayor Phil Mauger: Local election countdown

This will be my last Metropol column for the current mayoral term as we head into the local body election period.

Ihave thoroughly enjoyed my last three years in the role of Mayor. It seems fitting that we are currently celebrating Matariki – a chance to connect with the past, celebrate the present and look to the future.

In this term, I’ve seen Ōtautahi Christchurch go from strength to strength. People want to live here, construction is happening all over the city, and the vibe around Christchurch and Banks Peninsula is buzzing.

It’s been exciting to watch the One New Zealand Stadium rise out of the ground. This stunning facility will open in April next year. Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre will also open this year, and in December, we host the National Summer Games for the first time in 20 years.

We’ve also just celebrated National Volunteer Week in recognition of all the people who give up their time to serve the community. A special thank you to all volunteers – you do amazing work. Lastly, a big thank you to everyone who has played a part in making Christchurch the vibrant city it is today. I can’t wait to see what the next three years will bring.
