Check out our artworks: Lakeland Art

Set amidst the Selwyn countryside lies the rural town of Leeston (Karumata) – 45 minutes’ drive from both central Christchurch and Ashburton or 25 minutes from Rolleston.

With the charm and friendliness of an old established community, the town is well worth the leisurely drive as a destination in itself or as part of a tour of the area.

There are cafes, restaurants, a mix of retail shops and the Lakeland Art Gallery. This year the Selwyn Spring Show at the Leeston Showgrounds will be held on 15 October.

Lakeland Art Gallery has been open for just over five years now and its reputation has gone from strength to strength. The Gallery is a welcoming place to visit with a wide range of art in various mediums and forms from both local and wider Canterbury artists, new and established.

From a wide range of paintings to glassware, ceramics, sculpture and other unique creations there is something special for every taste. The gallery itself is spacious with good lighting and it is a pleasure to wander round and view the work on display. The work is refreshed monthly, and one area is reserved for the feature artist of the month. Many of these feature artists are well known Canterbury artists and bookings for this have been made well into next year.

The gallery arranges workshops – usually at the weekend – in a variety of mediums from art to craft to printing for example. The workshops are small and friendly and the tutors are well established in their field.

The gallery also hosts a Wednesday art group during the day and a Life Drawing group that meets Wednesday evening. There are also “Making” days at the weekend – as in printmaking and clay sculpture which culminates in a pit firing of the pieces on the local beach.

Visitors are welcomed by the friendly volunteers on duty and are free to wander through the gallery or to ask questions. The gallery is located at 80 High Street Leeston and is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm daily.
