Cake couture: The Sugar Room
Discover the sweet trends in wedding day showstoppers.
Several stand-out moments at a wedding elicit oohs and aahs from the crowd. One of those is when the bride first steps on to
the aisle – cue gasps and tears – and another is when the cake is revealed.
A showstopper of a wedding cake is a chance for the couple to stamp their personality on to their special day. It’s why professional baker Sam Stakenburg of
The Sugar Room loves working with a couple to craft the right cake statement for them.
“There is no right or wrong in what style a couple goes for. It’s about what suits their day and personalities. It’s one of my favourite parts of the job. Making a cake specifically for a couple.” Like many things, wedding cakes have their trends and fashions, so what’s hot right now? Sam lists a revival of the old-school vintage piping style.

“It’s old-style elegance with a modern touch. These cakes are labour intensive, yet they’re a labour of love. It’s so satisfying to see them finished,” Sam says.
The Sugar Room, located in Kaiapoi, provides cakes, cupcakes, doughnuts, cookies, and sweet treats for any event. Sam loves the challenge of bringing people’s vision for their unforgettable cake to life.
