One name in Christchurch’s cuisine scene, multiple destinations. Ahead of a busy Cup Week, we sit down with chef and restaurateur Shafeeq Ismail about his latest spot for all-day dining.

“I never imagined to open all these venues but this city gives me so much love and confidence, it’s just happened,” Shafeeq Ismail says, the mastermind behind hospitality institutions like Odeon and Story, and co-owner of Strawberry Fare. His latest project, Edizi, is a place described as where “Christchurch sits down, slows down, and eats well.”

The restaurant on Gloucester Street opposite the Isaac Theatre Royal is open for breakfast early and serves dinner until late.

“It’s an all-day vibrant eatery the city needs from 7.30am until 10pm,” Shafeeq says. “Christchurch is becoming an international destination so I believe we are doing our part by giving an all-day offering in a restaurant setting where service is at the core. We love table service, that’s what we do and do well.”

Thanks to Canterbury’s abundant growers, makers and artisans, Edizi, and all of Shafeeq’s locations, do menus well too. “Canterbury has the best landscape in the country by far. You just need to follow the seasons.

Nature gives us everything by season, it’s not rocket science,” he says. “It’s simple, listen and follow nature and everything will taste great.”
