Dreaming of Mykonos: Mykonos Cafe

Dream of the Greek island of Mykonos and you will have visions of whitewashed streets lined with bright bougainvilleas. Add in great ethnic food and this is truly an Aegean gem.

How could something like that possibly be re-imagined in Christchurch?

Enter Panos Bougos. He and his family have created a little slice of the enchanting beauty of the Greek islands, nestled in the heart of Riccarton. Their café and bakery, naturally named Mykonos, was born from a passion for homemade Greek cuisine and for the warm hospitality the islands are known for. Originally taught to make Greek food by his grandmother, Panos came to New Zealand 12 years ago, studied cooking and baking here, and always dreamed of providing authentic Greek appetisers and pastries to the people of Christchurch.

That dream came true in August 2023 with the opening of Mykonos Cafe. A family-designed fit out resulted in a charming, light, and calm oasis. The menu features a diverse range of Greek specialties, from classic spanakopita to the seasonal melomakarona and kourabies desserts. The baklava is quite mouth-watering.

There are also sandwiches, savouries, pies and of course, souvlakis. Every bite is a journey to the Mediterranean. Pair your meal with a cup

of Greek coffee or a sour cherry soft drink imported from Greece for the full Mykonos experience. Mykonos Cafe is open six days a week.
