Winter wonderland: Selwyn District Council

Selwyn stretches across the beautiful Canterbury Plains and is just west of Christchurch central. It’s bursting with activities, and is the gateway to every winter-lovers dream with six ski fields offering some uncrowded slopes and great terrain.

Just over an hour’s drive from Ōtautahi, the ski fields are located along the Great Alpine Highway. The huge variety of options means you’ll be spoilt for
choice if you’re wanting to do some laps. It’s also a great way to check out and get close to the snow for those that don’t
ski or snowboard.

Each of the ski fields have their own quirks and the best thing is that they’re so close to town, you could go for a day trip or spend a night.

There’s plenty to see and do along the way – you’ll be driving past some of the country’s best pie shops – and Selwyn is known for its artisan food and drinks, lovingly prepared using local ingredients.

If you’re going overnight, Forest Lodge is a great spot to park up with prime accessibility to the fields.

This off-grid accommodation is nestled in native beech forest – sitting 900m above sea level, you’ll get to enjoy the crisp mountain air. One of the highlights of the lodge is its stunning natural outdoor ice skating rink – BYO skates or koha to hire.
