A golden age: The Stamp Exchange

An ancient Chinese proverb tells us that real gold is not afraid of the melting pot. Now is an ideal time to test that if you have any of the precious metal you don’t want.

Gold prices internationally are high and may rise even more due to soaring crude oil prices and conflict between Russia and the Ukraine.

Locally, Matt Power, owner of Riccarton-based The Stamp, Coin & Gold Exchange, is looking for gold and paying top prices.

“People often have old gold stashed away in boxes. Maybe it has been inherited from a relative, it is beyond repair or just not wanted,” says Matt. “That’s where I come in. I want it, and I will pay a fair price for it,” he explains.

In addition to owning the business, Matt is a licensed second-hand dealer, former financial advisor, and former investment property specialist.
When his children grew up and left home, he decided it was time to take a break from the financial world and to make a childhood hobby – collecting coins and stamps – his new business.

Now he not only gathers up surplus gold, but also unwanted silver, coins, stamps, medals, collectibles and much more. A silver tea set, a solid silver flute and
a multitude of stamp albums line the shop’s shelves.

Working along side Matt are two other specialist staff, who know their carats from their carrots. Trust is important in his business and he encourages people to pop into the shop at 134a Riccarton Road, across from Westfield Mall, or to call him on 0800 Exchange (39 24 26).

“Prices [gold] may continue to rise but they change daily so now is a good time to sell, while they are high.” Matt guarantees payment, and also pays 10 percent more that other licensed second-hand dealers. “Come in, we will sit down and check the carats, and weight and agree on a price. Whether it is gold or something else that needs a new home, I’d like to see what you have,” he adds.

Gold & silver:
Old, unused, unwanted, the team will assess it and pay good money for it. Necklaces, pendants, rings, bracelets, cuff-links, tea sets, and other homeware items.

Coins & medals:
From gold sovereigns to silver dollars, the team is passionate about collecting old and foreign coins and finding them new homes with collectors.

Stamps & albums:
