Young creative talent on the rise: Art Metro

Josef Robertson (pictured) may only be in Year 7 at Cobham Intermediate, yet he’s already laying the groundwork for a future in the arts. Inspired by a friend’s involvement, Josef asked his parents if he, too, could join Art Metro’s after-school classes.

“I wasn’t in the same group as my friend,” Josef explains. “It didn’t matter because everyone at Art Metro has been welcoming.” Attending twice weekly, Josef is seeing progress in his sketching and drawing. “The tutor explains techniques to the group, then checks in with us individually. I’m learning a lot about shading and am improving my cartooning style.  One day, I’d love to create a comic book.”

Art Metro’s nine-week classes for kids align with the school term and kick off on Monday, 3 February 2025. They also offer two-day programmes during the school holidays, and Nadine Walmisley, Art Metro’s director, says, “Tuition vouchers make the perfect Christmas gift.”

Adults can also find a creative outlet with classes tailored to any ability level. The 2025 sessions begin at the end of January and continue year-round, allowing adults to explore their artistic abilities.

Find Art Metro at 465 Papanui Road.
