Welcome to the Queendom
Christchurch is full of women who rock, sharing their creative talent and taking on the world. We caught up with country pop singer Steffany Beck, who just notched up a career highlight opening for Scottish rockers Deacon Blue on their New Zealand tour.
Steffany, describe your style of music?
Easy! Modern country sound infused with gritty country-rock energy and powerhouse vocals. I like to blend heartfelt storytelling with driving guitars and anthemic hooks.
What has been the biggest moment of your career, and what’s the next goal?
I’m blessed to have many, but my highlights are opening for Deacon Blue’s New Zealand Tour (it was unreal), receiving Global Music Awards honours for my latest single Country Strong (which also charted at #1 on the Tasmanian & OZCMR Top 40 Country Chart), co-writing a song with the incredible Anika Moa through APRA SongHubs, and performing in one of my favourite festivals, Nostalgia.
Next, I want to release my debut album later this year, tour internationally, and finally meet Dolly Parton whom I wrote a song about called What Would Dolly Do.
Where have you found your inspiration lately?
I’ve found a lot of inspiration reflecting on my teenage years. I was so sure of myself, I had such a wild, rebellious heart and dreams that could fill stadiums. This has released the tap of inspiration for my upcoming debut album which is going in a country rock direction.
Who is your source of female music inspiration?
I’m constantly changing and evolving and certain individuals really stand out to me at different stages in my life. At the moment, [American country singer-songwriter] Lainey Wilson is on fire to me. She’s so edgy, cool, kind-hearted and doing her thing and I respect the hell out of that. It’s so inspiring for me to observe the rise in others.
Where can Metropol readers catch you next?
I’ll be at Country in the Country Music Festival in Leeston on 14 March with a stellar line up – myself, Kaylee Bell, The Eastern and more.
