Tiny build with big impact: NKR Builders
A stunning new North Canterbury home – complete with connecting airplane hangar – was made possible thanks to award-winning local company, NKR Builders.
The experienced Christchurch-based team prides itself on top-quality workmanship and went to great lengths to ensure this property was finished to their precise standards. Attached to the airplane hangar, the house has its own private runway, is fully off-grid and generates all its own power from solar panels and battery storage. Built to the 75sqm limit for the secondary occupiable dwelling on a property, there’s still room to build a larger main house in the future.
Inside, they’ve thought of everything, including high-level windows for cooling down the house in summer via thermal syphon effect, and a rainwater collection tank and filtration to take care of the owner’s water needs. A wood-fired stove takes pride of place, acting as both the perfect appliance to cook up a hearty winter meal, all while heating water through a wetback system. Director Nathan Roberts describes the home as being modern with rustic flair and uses energy efficient appliances throughout. “The addition of floating shelves, a freestanding bath, a custom heatshield behind the wood-fired cooker, full-width coloured glass splash-back and stone benchtops, are just a few of the features that complement the home,” he says.
Outside, the cladding is a mix of Siberian Larch, which is oiled to give a natural feel, and textured ply and battens stained in a darker colour make the Larch and oiled grooved ply soffits really stand out. The patio area is equipped with speakers in the soffits and a clever lighting design maximises the home’s outdoor living. To top it all off, the waste water is run to a worm farm septic system – with no need for added power – so the worms take care of all the waste. This home proves they really have thought of everything.
The NKR team works on a wide variety of projects, including design, project management, new builds, renovations and alterations, decks, fences and retaining walls, home repairs and maintenance, shop fit-outs, kitchen and bathroom remodels, as well as house inspections. So, whether you’re planning a big project, or need some expert assistance on some smaller tasks this year, NKR certainly has you covered.
