Think pink
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Nine women are diagnosed every day with breast cancer in New Zealand, so it’s likely that someone you know has been impacted. About 650 women die each year in New Zealand from the disease.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month helps highlight this, and raises much-needed funds for research. Supporting the cause may be as simple as making a donation, or organising your own in-office “Pink Day”. Throughout New Zealand, there will also be pink breakfasts and pink walks, so take your pick.
Breast cancer is most treatable when it’s found early. The Breast Cancer Foundation recommends knowing the look and feel of your breasts from age 20, showing any changes to your doctor, and having regular mammograms from age 40 onwards.
Signs of breast cancer include:
• A new lump
• An inverted nipple
• Nipple discharge
• Crusty nipple
• Dimples, puckering, or dents
• Orange-peel-like skin
• Unusual breast pain
• Shape changes
