The in and out in outerwear

This weather has us feeling like Goldilocks, scrambling to find a gorgeous layer not too hot nor cold.

A sartorial metaphor – we search for something lighter than a coat yet more protective of the elements than knitwear. Thankfully, designers and stylists have determined what’s in and out of outwear for the season ahead, so we can track down that ‘just right’ layer.

Recent runway-approved reports of the favourite outer layers for the coming months include bombers, quilted puffers, classic blazers, sporty anoraks, countryside-chic styles, capes, and turtleneck creations. Locally, the leading styles have filtered through from international trends to local fashion – you will find a plethora of bombers, blazers, and quilted puffers in stores. As for the other worldwide favourites? We’ll have to wait and see.

Simple is out, expressionism is in – however that looks for you. Patterns and textures intrigue the eye, while intricate details add depth and a form of escapism from the basic jacket. Hourglass silhouettes are slowly entering the outerwear movement, dominated by oversized styles in recent seasons. Bomber jackets and tailored blazers craft a cinched shape, paired with fitted pants. A global shift towards cropped jacket and outerwear styles is looming, yet the local landscape remains focused heavily on more sweeping, longline styles.

Drama screams in colour schemes, with floral-inspired summer colours stepping aside for rich, moody hues such as burgundy, navy and chocolate brown. These are best paired with neutral shades for a balanced look.
