The coast with the most
From fresh coastal air to dolphins and llamas, Kaikōura has all the ingredients for making lasting memories. Found yourself with three days to spare? Here – you’re welcome.
DAY 1: Wave goodbye to traffic lights and head north, to a place of natural beauty, incredible wildlife and fun-filled family experiences. Follow the coastline for the three-hour journey. When you arrive in Kaikōura, you could catch some fresh seaside air, learn some local history at the museum, and explore the bush tracks. Relax with a classic fish ‘n chip feast at Kaikōura lookout before falling asleep in your accommodation to the sound of crashing waves.

DAY 2: Rise early for a sunrise walk along the esplanade, and treat yourself to a coffee or big breakfast out. Then, jump on board a thrilling dolphin encounter tour, for a chance to swim with or see Dusky Dolphins in their natural environment. Don’t forget your camera. Beat the afternoon slump at the recently reopened Mayfair Theatre and enjoy a movie of choice up on the big screen, before enjoying a cosy night in your local accommodation.

DAY 3: Start the day by stretching your legs with an exciting half-day, fully-guided Llama Trek tour for three hours of stunning coastal views set with a mountain backdrop. Your guide will walk you to the Kaikōura peninsula seal colony, which is a cute and captivating must-do. Afterwards, choose from the great range of local restaurants and eatery options to enjoy a delicious lunch (hint, crayfish), before hitting the road and taking the highway home.

Don’t miss: Kaikōura Racecourse is the place to be this Marlborough Anniversary Weekend. In 2025, the annual race weekend event holds even more importance with race days on 2 and 3 November hosting the opening ceremony and five heats of the World Driving Championships with representatives from 10 countries, including Blair Orange from New Zealand. It will also mark the 100th Kaikōura Cup for a stake of $100,000. Pounamu Tourism will provide the Whale Train from Christchurch to Kaikōura return on both days.
