Taking the cake
What kind of cakes are going down a treat at Christchurch weddings? Here’s a sweet taster…
The traditional wedding cake dates back thousands of years to the age of the Romans, when the groom would break a loaf of bread over the bride’s head as a symbol of good luck. Since then, it has evolved and morphed in a myriad directions. From the massive, multi-tiered and elaborate cakes of Queen Victoria, to snow-white icing fruit cakes topped with bride and groom figurines in the 80s, to the trending cakes of 2025, which is a time of ‘anything goes’, from traditional pure white to colourful works of art bedecked with berries, citrus and stone fruits, or pressed edible flowers.
