Summer fun – camping tips

There’s something about summer in North Canterbury that makes packing the tent, lighting the camp stove and slowing right down feel like second nature.

The Good Camping Guide

Camping comes with its challenges, but it’s always worth the effort. In North Canterbury, find a range of fabulous spots to set up camp during the holiday season, from a tent in the  bush to a caravan amidst a busy campground.

With great weather, warm water, fun company (and the deafening sound of crickets), everyone enters holiday mode. It’s hard to find a better summer pastime than cooking and  sharing meals, playing cards, and sitting around the campsite chit-chatting about the day’s activities, or the age-old debate: who’s on dishes.

When you head out on the water, make sure your boat is up for it. Check you have put the bungs in.

Top tips for camping

  1. If you’re using a tent, practise setting it up at home and make sure you know what goes where. Colour coordinating the poles is a great start. Always pack a hammer.
  2. Don’t cut corners on the bedding. If you’re staying in a tent then invest in a self-inflating airbed. Make sure you have good sleeping bags or a duvet. And always pack your favourite pillow for a good night’s sleep.
  3. Take a hot water bottle, you just never know! Don’t forget a torch, too, for late night outdoor loo visits.
  4. Place a ground tarpaulin under your tent to add an extra layer of protection against moisture and wear.
  5. Never place your bedding up against the sides of tents. Take a shovel in case of the inevitable rain.
  6. Give kids jobs to do while setting up: delegate blowing up air beds and setting up simple camp furniture so they keep busy.
  7. Getting a good camping spot takes a little forethought. Don’t expect to arrive at popular seaside campgrounds in January and find a prime spot – you do need to book ahead.
  8. Check for stability after setting up your tent. Give it a gentle shake to ensure it’s stable and well balanced. If using a camper, take a small, plastic spirit level.
  9. Look for a level spot out of the prevailing wind.Don’t pitch or park under large trees.
  10. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and, crucially, make sure you know how to use it.
  11. Don’t scrimp on the food. Meals are a great part of the camping experience. There is something magical about preparing and sharing a meal in the open air.
  12. Take some games – from dartboards to board games and, of course, a good old pack of cards. For those less sociable moments – be equipped with a good book.
  13. Pack a first aid kit and medical supplies, especially sunblock and insect repellant.
  14. Choose your camping companions wisely – the best camping buddies are relaxed, easy going and can have a laugh in all situations camping can throw at you.
  15. If you have a power connection, take a coffee machine. Your camping buddies with love you for it.
