Styling small spaces

Styling small spaces is, arguably, an art. Finding a home for everything, avoiding over-cluttering, and applying the Marie Kondo method enough so that your space sparks joy.

Small living spaces, motorhomes, and studio apartments can be likened to the idea of ‘quality over quantity’. Having a smaller space is easy to embrace, and fall in love with fewer rooms to clean. The downside, however, can be styling that space if you have too many things and an unclear vision. It can end up cramped and cluttered, becoming a stressful space to live in.

Michelle Bevin, interior designer at TrailLite, has a plethora of tricks up her sleeve in styling small spaces, from years of experience helping people design luxury motorhomes and caravans.
Find Michelle’s top tips for making small spaces appear large and luxurious below.

Create an illusion

Reflective materials add dimension, crafting a cheeky illusion of much more space than there is. If you find an area feels increasingly cramped, Michelle recommends placing mirrors on walls opposite windows to maximise the reflective impact.

The Marie Kondo method

According to Michelle, giving your space the Marie Kondo method is often crucial. “Take everything out of the space and give it a thorough clean, then only put back items that set your heart alight,” she says. Make it a regular occurrence and clear out—and donate—what you no longer need.

Lighting in layers

Overlooked but incredibly effective, Michelle says multiple types of light and layering lighting through lamps and LED strip lighting can refresh a space. “Remember to add dimmer switches so you can increase the light needed or reduce for ambience. Correct lighting will make the spaces seem larger,” she explains.
