Steve’s scene
Your culture roundup from global music consultant, and Dolly Parton’s local publicist, Steve Guest.
S ummer is in full swing and Christchurch’s entertainment scene is proving it. Jimmy (not for the faint-hearted) Carr sent audiences into hysterics with two sold out comedy shows at the Town Hall last month, and Ed Sheeran performed another two spectacular sold out shows, and the last ever at Apollo Projects Stadium. Ed is a true genius, a gentleman, and someone who truly loves New Zealand.
On 5 February, the fantastically funny Jim Jefferies brings his own brand of Australian humour, swiftly followed by Ferrymead’s Nostalgia Festival on 7 February with an appearance from our own singer-songwriter Steffany Beck.
But the show you shouldn’t miss is Lainey Wilson at Wolfbrook Arena on Sunday 8 February. I saw this show recently in Nashville and it was phenomenal. Lainey is selling out arenas across the United States – a future ‘Stadium Country’ star for sure. (Say you were in the fan club first!)

Coming to Christchurch for the very first time is a personal favourite of mine, Scottish pop rockers Deacon Blue. They play the James Hay Theatre on 12 February – these guys sell out arenas in the United Kingdom, and are the soundtrack to my youth. I’ll be the one singing all the words at the back.

Make sure you get a ticket early for Country in the Country at Ellesmere Showgrounds on 14 March, where a great line up including The Eastern and Kaylee Bell is on offer.
Then, there’s Armageddon Expo for everything movie and comics coming to Te Pae in March. Oh, and don’t forget to grab your tickets to Te Kaha One New Zealand Stadium’s opening night gig – tickets are selling fast.
I think I need to lie down…
