Sounds of tradition: Breaking Plates The Musical
Europe is full of amazing traditions representing both countries and cultures, from dancing the flamenco in Spain to breaking plates in Greece.
To experience a taste of the latter, Breaking Plates The Musical is a must-see. After a sell-out first season, and in preparation for its overseas debut, Breaking Plates is back, and better, with a production at the Isaac Theatre Royal from 20 to 23 March.
Embracing Greek culture and traditions, the musical represents what community is about. Join Yorgo and the family as he dances on barrels, breaking plates at Christchurch’s Santorini Greek Ouzeri Restaurant. Set during the earthquakes in Christchurch, “Breaking Plates highlights how immigrants thrive to embrace the Kiwi lifestyle, while holding onto their traditions,” says writer Costa Kerdemelidis. Based on real people and real events, the musical explores a range of emotions, “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll love it,” he smiles.
While battling with the earth’s moving tectonic plates, differences are put aside as people come together in reminiscence and remembrance of the city that once was. “It is a story of community,” Costa explains, “telling how bridges and divides can be held, with a greater understanding of the diverse population.”
Featuring original Greek music and embracing culture, Breaking Plates is a show you do not want to miss.
