Slide like new again: Sliding Door Specialists

Repair, not replace, is the philosophy Christchurch sliding door specialist Stewart Poole lives by.

Why replace something that can easily be fixed? he asks, and Stewart should know. With more than 30 years engineering experience, and 16 years specialising in fixing sliding doors, Stewart (pictured) has the right tools, the know-how, and the solutions to sort any troublesome sliders out.

The owner/operator of Sliding Door Specialists Ltd, Stewart (aka Mr Ranchslider™) says many of these can be repaired to as good or better than new for a fraction of the cost of replacing the door. “We can make them work better than new,” he promises. “Doors of all ages can be repaired; a new door or a door from the 1970s.”

Repairs are fast and efficient with the company’s mobile service that can often have doors sliding better than new in less than  two hours.

Sliding door problems are often caused by worn, broken, or damaged, wheels or rollers, tracks, and seals. “All our staff are fully trained and have the skills that allow us to ensure we can guarantee the quality of our workmanship,” adds Stewart.  The life expectancy of the rollers and tracks is around 10-15 years, he says, and many homes built in the 1970s and 1980s have Ranchslider™ doors. “Today, we see many of the same problems occurring with rollers, and track damage. If your sliding door is difficult to open and close, is making weird noises, has difficultly locking, or is just generally frustrating you, it sounds like it’s ready for a service or repair.”

Stewart says he often corrects repairs undertaken by handymen or inexperienced tradesmen. The right skills and parts make all the difference. “We have the correct wheels and rollers for your door. “Also there are new wheel carriages with nylon or acetyl wheels available, and these improved carriages have two and sometimes even four   rollers. The weight of a sliding door affects the function and ongoing reliability of door wheels. We will advise and fit the best option wheels to suit the weight of your door,” he says.

“We will ensure that wheels and rollers are correctly adjusted so the door is balanced and fits squarely in the frame; so it locks and unlocks easily and runs smoothly. We can also repair the door tracks by installing a new aluminium track, or a stainless steel cover track, designed to fit perfectly over the worn and damaged track.”
