Sculptural serenity

Curves have appealed to our interior eye for years now – it’s a trend worth committing to for the long-term.

Mimicking nature and fluid movement, curvature invites peace and comfort to an interior space, and a breathtaking visual element to exteriors. Connected by shape to organic natural forms, curves offer the same tranquil environment to a space.

Between interior and exterior architecture, furniture, and décor, sculptural style can become a cornerstone of your home – yet modesty is key. Be mindful of balance and avoid overdoing it, experts advise careful consideration of design, layout and furnishing.

The seven principles of interior design: balance, contrast, unity, scale, proportion, details, emphasis, and rhythm prove a beneficial checklist before initiating changes. Less is more: start slow, adding elements only as appropriate. Where to begin? Doorways, windows, fireplaces, wall niches, shower screens, fixtures and fittings, benches and tabletops, wall art, mirrors, furniture, and décor.

A curved couch wraps around a room like a warm hug, while a rounded mirror is a softer alternative to a common home object. Embrace textiles with fluid patterns or textures, harmonising this with both similar colours and contrast. Swap square for circular fittings or curve the glass that isolates a walk-in shower. One small change could make your world a much more inviting space.

Architecture: Like this stunning modernist residence in Tai Tapu, including curvature in design is a smart move. Aside from adding a striking visual element to contrast straight lines and sharp edges, curved architecture offers structural and functional advantages. Furniture: Moulding to the form of your body, furniture that is curved in shape promotes relaxation, making it ideal for living spaces such as the lounge or bedroom. Utilising round edges in larger pieces of furniture offsets sharp architectural lines, becoming an effective alternative to alter the design of the home.

Décor: Undulated décor makes a winning case for understated and charming interior design. A practical way to lean into the trend, curved decorative objects are the easiest to find and incorporate into your current aesthetic.
