Refresh a functioning kitchen: MF Turnbull
How much value can a refreshed kitchen add to a home on the market? Better yet – what difference could it make to your quality of living (and cooking)?
We asked the team behind MF Turnbull, who have been recycling and revitalising the kitchens of Canterbury for over 35 years. One recent job was a word-of-mouth referral – a real estate agent told his seller just how much a beautiful new kitchen could boost the sale of the home. Instead of an expensive gut job, the home seller called the team at MF Turnbull who measured, quoted, and refurbished the kitchen for a great price. “It looks a million bucks,” says Jason Turnbull, who managed the project. A fresh colour and coating, brand new handles, and a modern benchtop resurrected the kitchen, returning it to be the heart of the home – and made it a great selling point.
What does the transformation process look like? “We work closely with the client to get their vision and offer ideas we’ve seen work for other people,” Jason says. The skilled craftspeople then remould your kitchen with meticulous attention to detail and a focus on sustainability. “I always tell everyone I work with, ‘If your kitchen is functional and has good bones, why not paint it instead of replacing it?’” Forget spending a fortune on takeout each night because you can’t use your kitchen – your cooking space will be left fully functionable, minus a door or draw front here and there. “Essentially, we are recycling our clients’ existing kitchens and reducing landfill waste.”
Jason and his crew have completed multiple kitchens both in the private and commercial sector this year – some over 20 years old. “They’re fully functional, just in need of a couple minor repairs and a new colour to freshen them up and bring them into today’s modern colour schemes,” Jason explains.

Step 1: What’s possible?
The team can refinish almost any kitchen (or furniture) and make it look new again. Send photos of your kitchen for an assessment plus a price estimate for the project.
Step 2: Price and plan
The team will meet you and undertake a full assessment for a quote. They can also discuss other alterations such as removal of overhead units, changing a cupboard to drawers or new benchtops/handles.
Step 3: Remove, refinish, reinstall
Their specialist team will remove your kitchen and it will be prepared and finished in the company’s modern workshop before reinstalling. Allow a day to remove, and reinstall, and 10-12 days to refinish.
