Our actions tell a story

A Christchurch business is helping companies elevate their impact through its sustainability reporting platform.

In 2021, Mitch Shaw, a former youth worker turned social entrepreneur, found himself at a pivotal moment. His social enterprise, Upstream, was successfully helping businesses make socially responsible procurement choices as well as enabling consumers to donate to charity just by using local companies listed on upstream.co.nz. This though, was just the start, Mitch realised.

“It’s a win-win, if a company gets business through the Upstream website, they donate a percentage of the money earned to our charities,” Mitch says. “And our platform means the companies can use the data to report their social impact.” It’s great but the scope was narrow, he says. “We were answering one question really well, which was how businesses could prove their social impact.

But what if we could broaden the brushstroke?”

That question led to Oatas, a powerful all-round sustainability reporting platform named after the acronym of its core philosophy: Our Actions Tell A Story.
Built to meet the growing demand for measurable environmental and social outcomes, Oatas empowers businesses to track, report, and communicate their impact. For construction companies bidding on major infrastructure projects, particularly those with sustainability requirements from local councils, Oatas has become a game-changer.

They’ve since been actively involved in some large construction projects across Christchurch – including partnering with BESIX Watpac, which is delivering Christchurch City Council’s One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha – driving sustainability and community impact in the same conversation.

Today, Oatas and Upstream are working in tandem, the data engine and the ethical supply chain, helping businesses both meet compliance and tell compelling stories of real impact.
