One year on: A celebration of past, present and future – Isaac Theatre Royal
The heart of Ōtautahi keeps beating.
One year ago, on 17 November 2024, the Isaac Theatre Royal opened its doors for a once-in-a-lifetime night. “Glittering under the chandeliers, we gathered to celebrate a decade since the Grand Old Lady’s post-earthquake reopening – ten years of healing, artistry, and the unwavering aroha of Ōtautahi,” says marketing manager Anh Nguyen.
“The evening was more than an anniversary. It was a reminder of what it means to rebuild not just a building, but a community. A reminder that live performance keeps us connected, hopeful, and inspired.”
Fast-forward to today and what a year it has been. “In the twelve months since our milestone celebration, the Isaac Theatre Royal has been buzzing with life, from sell-out concerts to intimate community events, national festivals, global tours, school productions, fundraisers, and theatre magic of every shape and style. Our stage has welcomed performers from across Aotearoa and around the world, all adding their story to ours.”

The team have celebrated some incredible milestones along the way:
• Winner: EVANZ Medium Venue of the Year
A recognition of the passion and people who keep this theatre running day and night.
• Winner: NZEA Venue of the Year 2025 for the NZ Squash Open
“A moment of absolute pride,” Anh says. The theatre transformed into a fully functioning glass-court squash arena. Beneath chandeliers, velvet drapes and historic balconies was a world-first, and a triumph of imagination.
• A year of fuller, broader, bolder programming
From classical concerts to iconic comedians, ballet to rock icons, community storytelling to international productions, the theatre has never felt more alive.

“At the heart of it all is our audience. Every clap, every laugh, every gasp, every standing ovation – you bring this theatre to life. Your footsteps echo through 117 years of history, and your presence writes our next chapter,” Anh explains.

Here’s to you, Ōtautahi. Here’s to the artists, the dreamers, the crews, the volunteers, the students, the families, the risk-takers, and the lifelong supporters who fill the Isaac Theatre Royal’s walls with energy.
“A year on from our ten-year reopening anniversary, the Isaac Theatre Royal stands proud, grateful, and eager for what’s ahead. The magic never left, it’s only getting stronger.”
