North Canterbury roadtrip checklist


For everyone road tripping to the top of the South Island, Tākaka, Golden Bay and the Marlborough Sounds for their Christmas break, we’ve put together a North Canterbury road trip checklist:

FROG ROCK

The Weka Pass between the northern end of the Canterbury Plains and the Amuri district has many weathered limestone outcrops.

OHAU POINT

Play spot the seal in this picturesque location near Kaikoura.

HURUNUI HOTEL

The oldest hotel to continuously serve alcohol. The infamous ghost of Charlotte who died in mysterious circumstances in 1903 is well known for her meet and greet shrieks.

GOREBAY

Pay a visit to Cathedral Gully lookout.

JACK’S HUT

On the edge of Canterbury territory, on the way to the West Coast, check out this stark green cabin.

FYFFE HOUSE

Painted in its original pink, Fyffe House is a leftover from the Kaikōura whaling industry.

MAUKATERE / MOUNT GREY, MOUNTAIN

Embrace the magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean, Canterbury Plains, Banks Peninsula, and Southern Alps.

AMBERLEY BEACH

Dip your toes in Amberley Beach and collect a washed pebble.
