Most wonderful time

Christmas is just knocking, and streets are starting to don their festive season attire. From the popularity of traditional colours, to modern themes segueing to white or black trees, there is no right or wrong. Christmas is a time to decorate from the heart. BY LYNDA PAPESCH.

  1. Pick a colour, a pattern, or embrace nature. If you can’t decide, go all out with a tree in every room. If you love piña coladas or polka dots, the smell of fresh pine, or snowflakes, incorporate them into your theme. Imagine a tree laden with sea colours, coconut shells, shell ornaments, driftwood trees, and swizzle sticks. For patterns, start with a ribbon and tie your own bows. Plaid, blue velvet, red satin, or burlap; whatever takes your fancy.
  2. Work with colour. It is one of the easiest paths to head down. Start with your favourite tree colour, be it green, red, pink, blue, black or white, then add a secondary colour with baubles and tinsel. Options are endless, although sometimes less is best.
  3. Check out some of the local shops for inspiration. I spotted a gorgeous tall white tree decorated only with peach-coloured silk paeonies. It definitely stood out from the crowd. Another stunner that popped up on my radar was a black tree, decorated only with gold and silver ornaments. Great for the wow factor.
