Love our neighbours: Alison Adams
Why Australia matters to Christchurch’s economy.
Australia is now Christchurch’s largest international visitor market – and when Australians choose to holiday here, the benefits flow directly into our local community. It’s not just hotels that gain. More visitors mean busier cafés and restaurants, stronger retail sales, packed events, and more work for the many businesses that keep our city humming.
There’s also a longer-term upside. People who experience Christchurch firsthand are far more likely to consider living and working here. That helps local employers attract skilled talent and supports sustainable economic growth.
This summer, ChristchurchNZ launched two campaigns in Australia – Made For It and Discover Different – designed to encourage more Australians to visit Christchurch and the Central South Island. They build on our strong air links, modern infrastructure and growing major events calendar.
Importantly, these campaigns are largely funded by central government, with $1.5 million secured through the Events Boost Fund and Regional Tourism Boost Fund. That means greater international reach without placing additional pressure on local ratepayers.
At their heart, these campaigns are about backing Christchurch – supporting local businesses, strengthening jobs, and ensuring economic opportunity continues to flow into our city and region.
