Lock up your gold: Commonwealth Vault

Unlike the late Queen Elizabeth II, most of us won’t ever have to referee in-family squabbles about who gets to wear which tiara at their wedding. We aren’t able to keep our jewellery secure in a state-of-the-art vault in our vast maze of cellars under our palace either.

However, personal jewellery pieces made of gold, silver, precious and semi-precious stones do carry a lot more than simply sentimental value. Gold has continued its monumental climb this decade, already surpassing $5000 per ounce in New Zealand this year.

“A quick audit of what you have in the house might surprise you, even if it was purchased from a chain store jewellery shop,” says Jerome Concisom, owner of Commonwealth Vault. “It may be 10, 12, or 14 carats, and it soon mounts up. We also find people inherit gold jewellery, tuck it away in a drawer and don’t think about it until disaster strikes and they are burgled.”

It is possible that the precious metals of your jewellery add up to plenty more than you think they do, and Jerome believes New Zealanders should become more informed about the value of items that are casually strewn across dressing tables and bedside consoles countrywide. “In India, gold plays a central role in the culture,” says Jerome. “People are very aware of its market value and they keep it secured either in bank deposit boxes, or with private providers like us.”

Jerome and his team offer an extensive range of deposit boxes where you can store precious metals and jewellery. “We have a range of sizes in our Christchurch branch and soon will be opening our second vault in Auckland,” he adds. “We provide the latest in security technology, and your access is ongoing and easy.”
