Editor’s picks: The wedding guest wardrobe
No matter how joyful a day it is, the first emotion that washes over me pre-wedding is panic: what will I wear, where can I buy it. I don’t want to be worrying about my wardrobe while my friends prepare to say ‘I do’.
I break my outfit down into a three-step approach.
- Setting: What’s the dress code and venue, and how does that fit into the season we’re in? Consider the wedding’s environment – for a garden I’ll source something whimsical, or lean into simplicity for a lakeside setting – and then tailor that to the weather. You don’t want to be freezing and uncomfortable on someone’s happiest day.
- Tribe vibes: What inspiration can I pull from the happy couple? This is where I ask myself how my outfit helps the bride and groom feel at home. What makes them smile? I want them to look back at their wedding gallery and know they were surrounded by their tribe. This helps to interpret the colour and details of your dress.
- Versatility: Where does this look fit into my existing wardrobe? The million dollar question – can I wear this again, to another event, or to work styled in a different way? I think about how it aligns with my style, or maybe how it pushes me outside of my comfort zone. It’s about how you feel, not what others might think.
From there, I play with and piece together accessories, including my hairstyle and makeup palette. Remember not to take it too seriously (as much as your mind makes you), you are the supporting act, not the main character. Search for something comfortable, classy, and sartorially savvy.
