Inspiring the next generation: ChristchurchNZ CEO Alison Adams

One of the most exciting things about Innovate Ōtautahi was the number of young people in attendance.

We know young people are engaged in innovation and technology – channeling that interest into great careers is the next step. We have organisations here in Christchurch helping to make this happen. One of our local tech champions is Elle Archer. As Executive Chair of Te Ao Matihiko, Elle helps support Māori engagement in digital and tech by providing a variety of learning and networking opportunities.

There’s a host of other local organisations that are connecting tech businesses to young and diverse talent. Canterbury Tech’s Mentor Programme is a standout initiative, offering Career Start and Mid-Career mentoring to support both newcomers and established professionals in the tech field. Meanwhile, Code Club Aotearoa plays a vital role by teaching coding and digital skills to children aged 7-13, fostering an early interest in technology and problem-solving.

In the aerospace industry, Aerospace New Zealand engages with students through the Aotearoa Aerospace Academy, while Women in Space Aotearoa New Zealand (WISANZ) supports women and gender minorities, providing mentorship and career guidance. These efforts are crucial in fostering a diverse and skilled aerospace workforce.

Christchurch is developing a world class tech and aerospace ecosystem. Arguably its greatest asset is the young people who will help it grow and prosper.
