How to find your dream dress: Brides of Merivale
Owner of South Island’s leading bridal boutique Brides of Merivale, Lisa Dermott answers your burning questions to guide your dress shopping experience.
When should I start looking for my dress?
Start the search for your gown at least 10 to 12 months prior to your wedding – some brides begin up to 18 months before. If you decide on a gown that needs to be ordered in for you, it can take up to five and a half months from the time of order… you also need to allow time to have any final alterations completed.
What should I think about when deciding which dress is the right one for me?
Most importantly you should wear your dress… your dress should not wear you! Your gown needs to show all your best features and disguise any areas you do not want to draw attention to. Listen to your heart and don’t be swayed by input from friends or family… this is your big day. Your alterations should ensure the gown is comfortable and easy to move in. If you plan to wear your gown all night, carefully consider if the train can be bustled for dancing, and ask, ‘Will I be able to dance and mingle all evening?’

Some brides change into another dress for the reception. Should I consider the same?
There has been a trend for a second reception gown. Brides who have more extravagant and heavy wedding gowns, very full skirts or long trains often opt for a second, more comfortable or ‘freeing’ look. Modern styled two-piece gowns also have the option to swap out the skirt for a lighter, shorter option at the reception. Equally, we still have brides who adore their gown and just want to spend the whole day in it.
Do I need to make an appointment to come in?
Yes. Our showroom is open by appointment only so brides have the entire space to themselves. It gives brides the freedom to browse through our gowns and spend time with their friends and family privately and uninterrupted.
How many people should I bring with me?
Our recommendation is two to four people. Often it can be an overwhelming experience for brides – too many opposing or strong opinions can be confusing. Choose your support crew carefully; do they share your vision and will they support your preferences?
How many fittings will I need?
Once you have purchased your gown, final fittings are required to ensure a perfect fit. At this time adjustments are made, additional accessories are created and your final hem adjustments are completed. Most ready-made gowns will need some alterations to ensure an individualised fit. We have an in-store alterations service, and our expert consultants will personally alter your gown for you. We recommend alterations are completed in the last 8 weeks leading up to your wedding. If a bride does not live in Christchurch, we offer an express fitting service, completing alterations over 2 weekdays. It is common to have two to three fittings before you collect your gown.

What accessories do I need?
Accessories are a very personal touch. Traditionally a veil and jewellery is worn to compliment your gown, but a modern bride can opt to have changeable accessories such as detachable straps or arm drapes, neck scarves, jackets, hair bows… anything is possible. If part of your gown doesn’t feel right, we can help. Some of our brands are flexible with their designs and if not, we can change or add details such as sleeves, bows, and buttons at the alteration stage.
