Homes with heart: Heartland Homes
Planning a new home build? With more than 1000 builds under its belt, one local building company offers personalised design and builds to suit any lifestyle, from farm cottages to granny flats or your dream family home.
Set just off Carters Road in Amberley, the display homes of Heartland Homes South Island sit neatly against the rolling North Canterbury landscape. Clean lines and modern layouts reflect the company’s long-standing focus on functional yet beautiful design.
Co-owners Geoff and Vicki Foster take pride in offering a personal touch, meeting most visitors themselves and moving easily between the showroom, local builds, and conversations with clients planning new builds from Nelson to Bluff – anything from a little granny flat to an extensive four-bed family home, and everything in between.

“Our aim has always been to make building feel achievable,” Vicki says. “Whether it’s a farm block, a coastal site, or a suburban section, people want a home that’s solid, honest, and ready to work for the way they actually live.”
Since opening its doors in 2008 in Putāruru, Heartland Homes has built a reputation for transportable homes, kitsets, and larger bespoke builds – a mix that gives the business its unique flexibility. Established by a group of New Zealanders with a passion for building, and more than 100 years of combined experience in the building industry, Heartland Homes thoughtfully designs and builds homes for all Kiwi families.
GO BIG OR GO HOME
Larger builds are an increasingly important part of the Heartland Homes Amberley story. While the company remains well-known for transportable options, more clients are turning to the Amberley team for full-scale design-and-build projects that accommodate modern family needs, such as extra living spaces, efficient heating systems, durable cladding, and layouts designed for both entertaining and everyday routines.

“People are looking for builds that won’t let them down,” Vicki says. “They want something dependable, a home that stands up to New Zealand conditions without needing constant attention.”
During a walk-through of the main show home, attention to practicality is clear. Storage is thoughtfully placed, circulation flows easily, and the materials are chosen with longevity in mind. Nothing feels excessive or temporary.
“It’s the balance that clients respond to,” Vicki says. “Our team is passionate about delivering true value to our customers, ensuring that each Heartland Home embodies simplicity and functionality. We only use and recommend the best robust, resilient building materials.

“We have several different builds locally, which show examples of different build types, allowing visitors to compare scale and style at their own pace and show that we ensure consistency across projects.” The Heartland Homes philosophy is solid engineering, repeatable quality, and transparent communication.
