Frost friendly plants

Waking up to a chilly morning and having to de-frost your car isn’t ideal. Even worse when that frost affects your garden.

Read on for a list of resilient plants, that thrive even in the frostiest of conditions.

Flowers
Early spring blooming flowers such as crocuses, snowdrops, and primroses can all survive the winter, and pansies are especially resilient. Violas, hostas, heuchera, irises, lily of the valley, cyclamens, and phlox also tolerate frost and provide some visual interest, as do catmint, sedum, and peonies.

Vegetables
Leafy vegetables like cabbage, lettuce, kale, collards, and chard can tolerate some frost. As well as, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, celery, spinach, peas, asparagus, rhubarb, radish, beets, carrots, rocket, onions, potatoes, but keep a cover handy for a sudden cold dip (below -6 deg C).

Pansies are a symbol of love and affectionate thoughts. In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the juice of a pansy was used in a love potion, referencing the Ancient Greeks’ and Celts’ use of the flower in herbal remedies and love potions.
