New beginning
The votes have been counted and throughout New Zealand, numerous new mayors and local body councillors are getting to grips with their roles.
Christchurch is among them with Phil Mauger winning the mayoralty race, joining seven new and nine returning councillors to run our fair city.
The days ahead will prove interesting. Trying to set aside personal agendas in the interests of what is best for the whole city is a difficult task, and, as those with local body history know, often a thankless task. Congratulations and good luck to you all.
We’re heading into an exciting time for Christchurch with all the events that form part of Christchurch On Show and Cup Week, and the revitalisation of the hospitality industry post-Covid-19.
Not everyone is a fan of donning a fascinator and heading for the race track, however there’s so much on offer that there is almost something for everyone.
Cute children, delightful baby animals, theatrics, music across many genres, and, of course all the art, culture and cuisine that makes our city’s heart beat are there to enjoy.
Let’s not forget the great outdoors either. As the days grow longer, warmer and more balmy, it’s an ideal time to check out the bays, beaches, bike trails and boulevards.
Don’t wait for visitors to arrive before deciding to get out and explore. And remember exercise is good for the body so why not make a bike ride, a beach walk, or a jaunt along an inner city route part of your routine, killing two birds with one stone.
