From old to gold, the art of restoration: McDonald & Hartshorne
As the festive season draws near, it’s an ideal opportunity for homeowners to refresh their living spaces, and create a cosy, welcoming atmosphere for holiday gatherings.
Bringing new life to cherished old furniture, Steve McDonald and Keith Hartshorne provide a seamless blend of craftsmanship and personalised service. For the past 20 years, co-directors Steve and Keith have been at the heart of McDonald & Hartshorne, offering high-quality furniture restoration and reupholstery.
Steve, with his hands-on experience as an upholsterer, and Keith, bringing decades of expertise in sales, continue to manage the business much as they did in the early days.
Keith personally visits clients’ homes to assist with fabric selection, considering factors such as sun exposure and pet-friendliness, while Steve oversees the factory operations, ensuring both domestic and commercial projects run smoothly.
With Christmas just around the corner, they encourage clients to address those small, often-postponed repairs or touch-ups. By simply emailing photos of their furniture, customers can quickly receive quotes, which help them understand project affordability before committing. This streamlined process allows clients to plan restorations without the stress of last-minute rushes before Christmas.
The team work on a wide range of pieces, from antique Bergère suites (pictured), to sentimental armchairs passed down through generations. They ensure each item is carefully restored, maintaining its original charm while being updated for modern use. Most projects are completed in 10-14 work days. Their attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship ensures clients receive high-quality results that last for generations to come.
McDonald & Hartshorne also offers original bespoke furniture, made locally in New Zealand.
