Find your garden hero: St George Boxwood Nursery
No garden is truly complete without the beauty of the buxus plant whether it is as a hedge or as a sculptured topiary.
T he buxus really is a “garden hero” and a must for the formal garden because its compact growing habit makes it easy to shape and maintain.
Brent and Edwina Bailey are devotees of buxus plants. They began growing them in 1990 at their home in Ashburton. Inspired by an article in Gardens Illustrated in 1995, they decided to establish a nursery for buxus topiaries. At first they transplanted the topiaries they already had on to an acre of land at Mt Somers and developed that for several years.
Subsequently, when moving to Christchurch, they brought the precious plants with them and established their topiary nursery – St George Boxwood Nursery – in Prebbleton.
Those topiaries are now between 20 -30 years old, with some exceeding three metres in height, extremely rare for buxus in New Zealand.
The nursery now specialises in potted topiary and has some quite stunning architecturally-shaped ornamental specimens available.
