Fendalton architecture wins national design award: Figure & Ground
Winning a prestigious national architectural design award is quite an achievement, made even better when the project is your own home.
One of two Canterbury projects recognised in the 2024 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards is this stunning contemporary home by architectural designer Sam Connell of Figure & Ground.
Nestled on Kōtare Street in Fendalton, the build won the National Award for New Home over 300m2. Sam’s own home, it is situated on a compact 645m2 lot, its façade exuding a minimalist charm, concealing the spacious and inviting open plan interior that unfolds towards the tranquil stream at its rear.
The residence sits elegantly on a secluded rear section overlooking the Avon River, and was designed and crafted to meet the evolving needs of a young family. “The design concept centred on functionality and versatility,” says Sam.
Careful planning addressed challenging stream setbacks while ensuring utmost privacy from the shared driveway and street. Judges noted design features and creative solutions including the clean lines and varied exterior materials of brick and cedar for durability, along with quality craftsmanship. Internally, the integration of built-in joinery, along with timber flooring, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the emphasis on feature lighting adds to the overall ambience, they say.
The main living area, serving as the focal point of the home, and its seamless transition to well designed outdoor areas, also impressed the judges. “Overall, this dwelling offers an exquisite blend of contemporary design, functionality, and comfort, making it an ideal sanctuary in the heart of the city,” they noted.
