Editor’s note: Events & being ‘extra’

Print this story

It’s August – that means Christmas is just around the corner. Yes, I have already asked around the Metropol office how early is too early to put the tree up. The answer? Not yet.

I’ll persevere. The time in between now and December flies like a rocket as the social calendar comes back to life with the sun.

Luckily, if you’re pulling on your thinking cap to plan an event or conference over the coming months, this special issue has everything you need. Regardless of their size, conferences and events inject thousands of dollars into the local economy, so we’re shining a spotlight on the dedicated businesses and people who make them happen. For what to serve and where to convene, to the activities that make forever memories, find it all from page 29.

Celebrations like these are an excuse to step outside our comfort zone and embrace the opportunity to be ‘extra’.

Put simply, they’re the gateway to the alter egos – that tame coworker turned life-of-the-party or family member you never knew could sing like that.

What better time to affirm that maximalism has returned to the zeitgeist? This is a philosophy that embraces self-expression, excess, and eclectic vibrancy, with an elegant edge. Rich, loud, and proud – maximalism presents a ‘more is more’ mindset, contrasting the minimalist movement. Need some guidance to plunge into this colourful, patterned world? That’s nothing a Trelise Cooper silk set can’t fix, like the gorgeous one on our cover.

Our local fashion industry is abuzz, in preparation of the six-day strong New Zealand Fashion Week schedule (finally) coming to Auckland’s Shed 10 and surrounding areas in late August. Inside, on page 17, find a sneak peak of what the ‘new look’ event will offer, which NZFW board member and creative advisor Dan Ahwa says is “in step with the times”, and not “overly-pretentious or intimidating”. I can’t wait.

I’m so excited, too, for Chicago The Musical to strut across the Isaac Theatre Royal Stage in just a few days. Congratulations to our Chicago Showstopper Giveaway winner Paul van der Meys who will get to see this show in style.

Events keep our city humming. Book in, show up, have fun. See you out there.
