Don’t be afraid to seek financial advice: Alistair Bean

With 30 years of experience working as a financial adviser, Alistair Bean writes about the biggest mistakes people make concerning their financial health.

I have been a financial adviser since January 1995, initially at a major bank, where ultimately I spent more than three years as regional manager of financial advisers for the South Island and then another year in central districts. After this, I ran my own business from February 2013 onwards.

During this time, I have assisted many clients in reaching and exceeding their financial goals and outcomes. I have seen planned succession to their families, many of whom are now also our clients.

The greatest financial advice achievements happen when medium to long-term investment relationships occur with clients to help them achieve their goals.

“My longest client financial advice relationship began in 1995. This person is still a client to this day, as well as her family members, friends and colleagues.”

It was recently reported that two out of three New Zealanders would like to seek financial advice, but 42% were too afraid to ask.

This is one of the biggest mistakes that people can make. Not seeking advice can mean the difference between building your nest-egg to the level that you are aiming for and not achieving your long-term and retirement goals. Imagine not seeing a doctor for health issues, or cutting your own hair, or boarding an aeroplane and choosing to be the pilot without any training, even cooking your own meal at a restaurant; this is the same as not seeking financial advice.

At Alistair Bean & Associates – Financial Advisers, we’re not really that scary, which you can tell by the smiles on our faces. In fact, we are very friendly; however, if I look a little scary, then I can tell you that Jordan is super nice, something her clients often say.

The process can be quite simple. We’ll talk about your short, medium and long-term goals and can give you some assistance with creating goals. We’ll chat about your attitude to risk, discuss diversification and check your ongoing cash needs as well as retiring any debts. We’ll then monitor your investment choices and recommendations for you and meet regularly to review. All this time, we’ll keep researching markets and different types of investments on your behalf in the background. We’ll also look at any investment and KiwiSaver portfolios you have and give you our opinion.

The other piece of advice is, don’t delay. If you haven’t already started, begin your planning today, every week counts, and every hesitation can mean a smaller pot.
