Destination Fiordland

Arguably one of New Zealand’s most beautiful scenic regions, Fiordland is the gateway to Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and three of Aotearoa’s great walks.

The region is also home to plentiful accommodation, adventure opportunities, and a haven for foodies too. Whether relaxing, or chasing an adrenaline rush, visitors to Fiordland will find plenty to see and do, for all ages and throughout the year. Here are some suggestions:

Take a cruise
Piopiotahi Milford Sound is the jewel in Fiordland’s crown and has been attracting international visitors for over 100 years. Take a leisurely cruise through Milford, Dusky, or Doubtful Sound, enjoying idyllic sea views, frolicking dolphins, and seals sunning themselves.

The busy lakeside town of Te Anau boasts a wide range of activities on or off the water, fine dining restaurants, and luxury accommodation.

Visit Manapōuri
This peaceful township is located on the eastern shores of Lake Manapōuri and is the base for discovering Pātea Doubtful Sound, sometimes called “the sound of silence”. It is the deepest of the Fiordland fiords at 421 metres and has several waterfalls.

Experience Dusky Sound
In the southwest corner of Aotearoa, Tamatea Dusky Sound has more than 350 islands to pass through; ideal for mooring and trips ashore. A wide range of boat cruises offer a leisurely way to experience these fantastic land and seascapes, and an abundance of wildlife.

Walk a mile or two
The region is home to numerous short walks and multi-day hiking trails, including the spectacular Milford, Routeburn, and Kepler Tracks.

Lake2Lake Cycle Trail
The trail runs for 28km alongside Lake Te Anau and the Waiau River towards Lake Manapōuri. The trail is wide enough for cyclists and walkers and is rated as Grade 2-Easy. The trail can be biked in both directions, and jet boat and road transfer options are available. Bikes and e-bikes can be hired in Te Anau.

From the air
Take to the skies by fixed-wing, helicopter or floatplane and witness the breathtaking beauty of Fiordland from above. A scenic flight over Fiordland reveals a world of lush peaks, sparkling lakes, glaciers and spectacular fiords.
