Dangerously easy to drink: Humdinger Gin

A well-deserved sip on a refreshing gin is more than just an in-the-moment joy.

It links you through history to the 11th century, when gin was valued for medicinal properties. Its taste probably led to some face pulling, but one local company is dedicated to ensuring you won’t need a spoonful of sugar to help their fresh modern creations go down.

Humdinger Gin is a husband-and-wife distillery with two stunning gins.

The Dry Gin designed by Andrew Lewis is based on his palate, while the Citrus Gin was designed by Saskia Lewis based on her ideal gin.  The Dry Gin received a gold medal at the NZ Spirits Awards in 2021, but The Citrus Gin was in the gold medal range for quality and value at the 2022 London Spirits Competition (picking up a Silver Medal overall).

“Gin is traditionally known for its juniper-forward flavour, complex flavours, and long finish. Humdinger’s Citrus Gin is consciously designed to be citrus-forward, crisp, and uncomplicated (which makes it dangerously easy to drink),” says Andrew.

At distillery tastings, the Citrus Gin is the most popular, giving Saskia bragging rights, but Andrew is happy being second best to his wife.

“It’s a popular gift, the giver often finds the bottle is opened and enjoyed while they are there!” says Andrew.
