Cushion couture: Designer Becky Lee

Christchurch is home to a kaleidoscope of colour in cushion form.

“Without apology I am a self-confessed colour-holic from the tip of my ruby red slippers to the top of my tiara,” interior designer Becky Lee says, better known as The Cushion Couturier.

“As far as black goes I own a studded black leather jacket and mascara – end of story.” The same goes for her Rutland Street boutique and workroom in the leafy suburb of St Albans, a veritable symphony of rich colour, modern opulence, mesmerising patterns, and playful sophistication. “I am a prolific maker of things – taught by my mother how to mend, sew, knit, embroider, crochet, bead, weave, paint and make things that will stand the test of time.”

Becky’s lifelong love affair with colour and textiles was the inspiration for her successful interior design business and after years in a ‘conservative’ industry, her handmade custom cushions mean she can fully express her talents through colour and pattern.

The ride so far has been wild and rewarding, Becky says, ahead of her bricks-and-mortar store’s one year anniversary in March. “It’s been a whirlwind being CEO, maker, marketer and merchandiser all in one.”

Becky’s collection of handmade designer cushions and a selection of beguiling giftware make this experience a rich one, coupled with her one-on-one interior styling expertise and vibrant personality. “When it comes to decorating, I believe in having a strong identity and a distinct point of view. I treasure beautiful textiles and the sans souci bohemianism they add into your home. My cushions are objects d’art, each meticulously crafted by my own hand in Ōtautahi and styled to be a talking point.”
