Buying New Zealand-made means investing in the highest quality and expert local craftsmanship. With over 100 years of combined experience, that homegrown skill isn’t hard to find when you know where to look.

McDonald and Hartshorne carry out refurbishments from all walks of life, from couch and chair reupholstery to furniture repairs and commercial refurbishment.

By using only the best materials from around New Zealand, the team values refurbishing furniture to last their clients a lifetime. “Shopping local means you have thousands of fabric options suitable to every budget without compromising on quality,” says administration manager Neke McDonald.

Not only is New Zealand-made furniture built to last, it is built to be passed down. As a generations-old family heirloom loses its sparkle, McDonald and Hartshorne recognises its solid framework to refurbish each piece to its former glory.

The majority of imported suites are sewn all in one, “this often means that the whole unit needs to be unstitched and disassembled to repair,” Neke explains, highlighting the benefits of enlisting local craftsmanship. “Having a New Zealand-made suite means that the back seat cushions and seat cushions are removable. This means that when the foams have broken down and are no longer comfortable, we can replace the inners in a density of your choosing with a simple measure up.”

McDonald and Hartshorne’s online retail showroom offers a wide selection of New Zealand-made furniture alongside a diverse range of locally soured fabrics and materials. “Locally made furniture is designed with the Kiwi body in mind,” says Neke.

“Years ago our grandparents and great grandparents purchased things that last a lifetime, not to throw away after five years.”

Visit McDonald and Hartshorne at 424 St Asaph Street, Christchurch, and invest in furniture that lasts.
