Cool, collaborative outcomes: T&A Construction

Respect and enthusiasm for historic buildings joins determination, solid building knowledge, and craftsmanship within T&A Construction. Renowned with the developers and designers for the fabulous result on the Public Trust building among others, the team is in the process of adding two more gorgeous phoenix-style repairs and renovations to its portfolio.

With Box 112 once more at the helm of the projects and 360 Architecture leading design, T&A complete the partnership which will see the MED building and the New City Hotel looking more gorgeous and stronger than ever. “Our three companies share the common goal of achieving outrageously cool outcomes,” says Aaron Walker, director of T&A.

The MED building in in Armagh Street opposite the Margaret Mahy playground is nearing the end of a full repair and renovation. Already fully rented, T&A crafted the fitout. The spaces include offices plus a double height art gallery on the east side. “The art gallery is a space where the public can experience the joy of the interior of the building.” Retaining the open-space character, original elements are saved plus recycled timbers and rimu flooring is incorporated.
The exterior is brought back to life with structural repairs and a gorgeous paint job. “It was looking a bit sad and now it is looking sharp,” says Aaron. The strengthening on MED was not too onerous. Having been built by the Government for the electricity sector back in the day, its original engineering was more robust than most of its contemporaries.

The art deco New City Hotel is the next lucky building to receive the dream-team’s magic. Built over 90 years ago, it was operating as a backpackers and pub until 2018. Its second chapter will include hospitality and retail on the ground floor and some signature cool offices above.

A small brick building on Bath Street will be a stylish office. Box 112 is accepting interest from lessees now for occupation in 2023, “but on experience with Public Trust and MED, people will need to be quick,” says Aaron.

New City will require more intensive strengthening, and the exterior will be revived “with full love and a beautiful paint job,” says Aaron. Inside will see retention of as many character features as possible, with recycled materials and plenty of glass to ensure the office spaces are light and bright.

While T&A work on a myriad of projects from small office fitouts to architectural home builds, heritage is a specialty and a passion. “My favourite part is that we are involved from due diligence pre-purchase, through concept design and budget, to completion. We are also responsible for ongoing maintenance of the buildings. I love that T&A becomes a part of Christchurch’s past and we then oversee that heritage into the future.”
