Chairs to that

Visualise yourself basking in the summer sun, comfortably reclining on your favourite chair. Now, what makes the perfect outdoor chair?

With endless considerations from durability, aesthetics, to comfort, practicality, and price, finding furniture can be overwhelming.

Before you seek out the chair of your dreams, consider the chair’s function. Why do you want the chair? Is it going to be styled beside a table, or placed by itself? Will it be in the shade or sun? Sheltered? Exposed?

Ponder its purpose. A bar stool? A bench seat? Something to lounge on? Once you have envisioned your dream chair, consider its material. A chair’s durability is mostly determined by the materials used in its construction. Aluminium, wicker, wood, and plastic are some popular choices. So how do you decide which material is more suitable than another?

It all depends on your lifestyle. Industry experts suggest aluminium is the most durable material with resistance to weather damage, including rain, wind, and direct sunlight. Although it may heat up in the sun, it’s rust-resistant and easy to clean with a wipe down. Another pick is a wicker or rattan-style outdoor-specific chair. The latter is ideal for coastal homes, but both style nicely outside homes with a modern, chic, clean aesthetic.

Wicker or wooden chairs are durable and have timeless appeal; however, regular maintenance, such as oiling, is required to protect against weather conditions. These chairs are best placed under a shelter, away from direct sunlight. Add outdoor cushions, and you will achieve a cosy and inviting country vibe.

Plastic is the most cost-effective option and easiest to clean. Classic deck chairs, sculpted masterpieces, and stackable chairs – there is always something made from plastic. Yet, the saying rings true: you get what you pay for. Although it may be cheaper than its aluminium and wood counterparts, plastic chairs fade, become brittle, and crack over time through prolonged sun exposure. Storing and covering them can help maintain their condition.

Weigh up these possibilities and then hit the local shops. You’ll be basking in the sun with a magazine and ice-cold drink in no time.
